✅ Royal Coast Track – What to Expect & General Info (Extended Version)


  • A 26 km iconic coastal trail running between Bundeena and Otford in the Royal National Park. Known as one of NSW’s best long-distance day or overnight hikes.


🌄 Scenery & Landmarks


  • 🌊 Cliff edges & ocean lookouts with sweeping views of the Pacific.

  • 🪨 Wedding Cake Rock (fenced for safety) and Eagle Rock – famous photo spots.

  • 🏝️ Wattamolla Lagoon & Beach – great rest area.

  • 🏞️ Curracurrong Falls – one of the rare waterfalls pouring directly into the ocean.

  • 🏖️ Marley Beach, Garie Beach, and several secluded coves.

  • 🌺 Wildflowers from late winter to spring.

  • 🐨 Wildlife sightings including wallabies, lyrebirds, echidnas, and whales (seasonal).


⏱️ How Long It Takes


  • ⏳ Full track: 1–2 days

  • ⛺ Overnight option: North Era campground (booking required)

  • 🚶 Day sections: Many choose shorter segments like Bundeena → Wattamolla or Wattamolla → Otford.
🌿 Track Conditions & Difficulty

  • Mostly graded track but includes steep climbs, creek crossings, stairs, sand sections, and exposed cliff edges.

  • Moderate to hard depending on weather and fitness.

  • Not recommended during extreme heat.


⚠️ Safety Key Points


  • Bring at least 2–3L of water per person (more on hot days).

  • Strong sun exposure – hat, sunscreen, long sleeves advised.

  • Stay behind barriers near cliffs – many edges are unstable.

  • Check tides, especially near rocky coastal sections.

  • No shade on long stretches – prepare for full exposure.

  • Phone reception is patchy.


🅿️ Parking & Transport


  • 🚗 Main trailheads:
    • Bundeena (paid parking)
    • Otford Lookout (limited parking)

  • 🚆 Train available to Otford Station (short walk to the trail).

  • 🚤 Bundeena Ferry available from Cronulla.

  • No shuttle between ends – plan transport early.


🎒 What to Bring


  • Sturdy hiking shoes

  • Water & snacks/food

  • Sun protection

  • Light jacket (weather can change fast)

  • First aid + blister care

  • Map or offline navigation app


🧭 Cultural & Environmental Respect


  • The area contains Aboriginal heritage sites including middens and engravings – do not touch or walk on them.

  • Stick to designated tracks to protect delicate ecosystems.

  • Carry out all rubbish.
